Taurus G3 – Unboxing, first impressions

So, we open it up and take a look at it here out-of-the-box, pretty simple. The firearm itself, this really, in my opinion, is the epitome of KISS. It doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, I mean it is just simple. The sights here for the most part are non-adjustable, they pretty much come fixed, some of the reviews that I looked at said they come spot-on, we’ll find out. One thing that I do like, and you’ll notice right when you take it out, is ergonomically it’s very comfortable, at least it is for me.

Taurus G3 Unboxing

Ergonomics and other features

It’s got this really coarse sort of almost like 80 grit 60 grit sandpaper, I like that. Some other features here, real simple, are: we do have a safety, it is not ambidextrous and neither is the slide release, so lefties, probably not the gun for you. The other thing is the takedown, I really like how it takes down, it’s simple, we drop the mag, and then all we do is pull back here, pull those down, drop it forward, and it slides off, piece of cake. Goes back on, you got to get that there straight, and there we go, a little wiggle and we’re good to go.

Taurus G3 Trigger

The trigger here’s not too bad, we’re coming in around 6 pounds, kind of like a lot of the modern firearms, the pistols, it’s got this little centerpiece also as part of the safety. It will not fire unless you depress that center part. I do like the front, it’s kind of taper there, which makes it a little easier to slide in. We’ve got a rail on the bottom.

Taurus G3 Test

Guys, I don’t know what else to say other than let’s put some rounds in it. I want to run some steel case through it, I want to see how this does with steel case, and then I’ve got some CCI range ammo, and basically just see how many rounds we can get through it, see if we have any jams, see accuracy. We’ll try playing it a hundred, we’ll try playing maybe a 200, but bottom line I just want to see if I could get it to jam, I have feed issues, light primer strikes, and anything like that, because let’s face it, if it does work great, definitely affordable, and it is a light pistol.

Taurus G3 at the range

I’d like to start off pretty much any review of a weapon with, I don’t want to say the cheapest – the most affordable, but some of you might say cheap. I’ve had great luck with Tula, steel-cased.

Tula Steel Ammo

If any ammo is gonna give a weapon issues it’s usually gonna be steel case, which is why I like to start with it, so we loaded up. This is supposed to hold 15 rounds. I could only get 14 in, and this thing has got to be one of the tightest springs that I have ever loaded. What I might do later is load it and let it sit. I have experienced before with some Glock mags that they loaded particularly difficult with steel, I’m guessing had something to do with the friction, will test that here, we’ll run some brass case, but let’s just see how it does with steel.

It doesn’t want to pull back there! That’s kind of interesting here, it’s not want to pull back with the full mag, well, that’s not off to a great start, let’s try taking one out and see if that makes a difference. That seemed to make a difference, a really tight spring, yeah, I don’t know about that.

I like how that shoots though! That was a very comfortable trigger pull. Yeah, that felt good, I want to do some more!

A tight spring – hard to reload

There’s definitely something up with this mag, with the mag follower, it’s like it’s catching. I’ve only got maybe six rounds in here, and I tell you my finger is about ready to split in half. Let me show you here, see that where that rear, does not want, man, I don’t know, let’s try some brass case. I got those Tula in there, I don’t want to take those out.

CCI brass cases

I got a pocket full of range ammo CCI brass case, let’s see if that does any different here. So far that seems to make a difference, yeah, guys, it’s some sort of friction coating thing on that steel case. What I will do, because I like shooting the Tula and some of you do too, is will break this down, will maybe kind of lubricate the inside and see if that fixes it. This is fixing the problem or not have any more hang-ups here.

A Man Is Putting Bullets in A Gun Magazine

I did read a couple reviews where it said it didn’t like the Tula, it didn’t really specify wasn’t saying whether it was light primer strikes, failure to eject or anything. That still is a tough spring, there’s fifteen, let’s quick fire these, I’m gonna got an old target there, let’s see what we get for accuracy. We’re way beyond concealed carry / self-defense here, were probably a good 15-20 yards.

Groups at 25 yards

A whole bunch of stuff on it, I was sighting it in last night using my ATN night vision, and got a couple of shots here, here, here, here, shooting just a little bit left. Again, wasn’t paying real close attention. Let’s try again, let’s have some more fun and do some rapid-fire. I wanna try to pay a little more attention for accuracy here.

Still got actually a pretty tight group here, that second round, we’re still just a little bit down and to the left, let’s see if we can adjust that. I took the mag downstairs, I took it apart and I old everything up, let’s see if it takes the Tula a little bit better.

They definitely went in easier, but still kill on my fingers, I just want to finish this box as far as checking for light primer strikes or any kind of jamming, failure to eject, any kind of stuff, things like that, and then I’m gonna fill it and probably let it sit overnight.

This is the last of the box of Tula!

This may be pushing it, but, hey, let’s give it a shot at a hundred!

Not bad for 50!

A Man is Aiming at 50 Yards

Have you guys ever seen ‘Sicario’?! Obviously I can’t do it! Some more Wolf!

And the last one here, we go with some Federal self defense hollow-point rounds!

No jams after more than 100 rounds

Guys, that was the last 50 rounds of Wolf Military Classic, we’ve done 50 rounds of Tula, and we have not had one single jam, failure to eject, or anything. I did have two or three light primer strikes with the Wolf Military Classic, but because this is double action I got them fired off.

There’s not a good review without tests and some different ammo, here’s some 147 grain like semi-wadcutter’s flat-nosed, sometimes these cause hang-up, so let’s just see.

Not one issue!

A Man Is Shooting a Firearm at The Range

200 rounds without cleaning – still no issues

One last thing as far as reliability, I have not cleaned this thing, so we just put close to 200 rounds some of the dirtiest Wolf Military Classic, Tula, some Federal, some CCI. It’s dirty in there, and it ran flawlessly, guys, flawlessly!

So, the Taurus G3, I’m impressed, I really like it. I will say it is comfortable to shoot, it’s very comfortable to shoot, almost could be up there and some of my top comfortable to shoot.

Taurus G3 – Comfortable, Reliable, and Affordable

A lot of folks think Taurus is a second-rate gun manufacturer, you know, they’ve been around for a while. It would appear that they’ve had a few issues in the past. I will say they’re moving forward though, they seem to be putting out some pretty good stuff.

The big thing is it’s affordable, and the last couple of guns that I’ve shot I’ve been very impressed with, I’m very impressed with the G3. My finger hurts like hell from that mag, that mag needs a little work, that spring, you need some oil and stuff, but that’s pretty small.

Final words

If you’re looking for a gun and you’re law enforcement / military you’re gonna be shooting hundreds of thousands of rounds through it, and your life depends on it. This would probably not be at the top of my list, but I’m gonna be picking something like Glock, HK, Sig, Springfield, something that’s also going to cost two to three times this. So, for the average person who’s going to go through a couple hundred rounds, maybe 500 rounds a year, they’re looking for something to stick bedside and not break the wallet.

I like it, okay, I’m very impressed with it, it breaks down easily. I just put some of the most challenging ammo through, a Wolf Military Classic, Tula steel case, again these are affordable, but they do tend to hang up some guns, and this ate them up and spit them out without issue.

Anyway, I hope you found this helpful, I sure had fun shooting this, I really like this little gun, you can get 15/17-round mag. Until next time, happy shooting, be safe, remember gun control starts at home with us, and educating our kids.
